Willow Basket

These willow baskets are made by Ira and Ana, Polish-Lithuanians who live on the outskirts of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. They use willow with its bark still intact, collected from the forest. Willow with its bark still intact is vulnerable to drying, so they can only be made during the humid winter months. When they are freshly made, they still retain a green hue, but as they dry, they turn brown. They have a shape common to Baltic baskets, and are woven tightly and sturdily to hold potatoes and apples.
