Beside the lake

Beside the lake

By the lake

In the south of Lithuania, I visited my relatives in Stasis, who live on the shores of a lake. It's not a private beach, it's a private lake. The lake is state-owned, but the houses surrounding it each have their own piers so they can come and go as they please.

There are no fences between the neighbors, and the neighbors are just on the other side of the trees, so it's a relaxed atmosphere. Young people who come to visit the neighbors' houses are also free to come and go on the premises and swim.

When I asked Stasis's second cousin, Daiba, if she was on summer vacation, she said, "I'm planning to take my vacation in the fall. In the summer, every day after work is like a holiday." Even after the summer solstice, the days are still long this time of year. You can enjoy a half-day after work by taking a dip in the lake. Taking a vacation in the fall and going somewhere warm is a smart idea.

Even though it was her day off, Daiba was busy tending to the vegetables and flower beds she was growing. She also cooked delicious meals for us while chatting with Stasis.

Lithuanians love to chat, and even after the sun went down, we continued chatting until late into the night, talking about everything from casual everyday topics to current world affairs.

Swallows and dragonflies flit around the lake, which changes every moment from morning to evening, and cranes fly leisurely in the distance. Just looking at it was a landscape that cleansed the soul.
